Workwear according to European standards: what you need to know about quality and safety

Workwear is not just a uniform for employees. It is the main protective element that ensures the safety of the worker at the workplace. The compliance of clothing with regulations is particularly important, and this is why there are standards that regulate the requirements for workwear. In Ukraine and Europe, workwear must meet certain quality standards, such as DSTU and EN. Compliance with these standards guarantees safety, comfort, and durability of work clothing.

DSTU is the Ukrainian national standard that sets the requirements for product quality, including workwear. These standards are mandatory in Ukraine. At the same time, EN (European Standard) is a set of requirements applicable in the European Union and many other countries. They cover various aspects of production: from materials and tailoring to ergonomics and wear resistance.

When it comes to workwear, DSTU and EN standards define their key characteristics: protective properties, resistance to external factors, durability, and ease of use. It is important that these standards are adapted to specific working conditions, whether in construction, heavy industry, or agriculture.

Advantages of workwear made according to DSTU and EN standards

Safety guarantee. Workwear made according to DSTU or EN ensures the worker's protection from injuries and adverse environmental impacts. For example, fire-resistant fabric properties are crucial for workers in the metallurgical industry and are regulated by standards. For construction workers, mechanical strength of the suit is critical, while in the chemical industry, resistance to aggressive substances is vital.

High-quality materials. DSTU and EN standards strictly regulate the materials that can be used in workwear production. Typically, these are fabrics that combine natural and synthetic fibers to achieve maximum strength and durability. Additionally, these materials are tested for resistance to water, oils, dirt, and mechanical damage.

Comfort and ergonomics. Workwear that complies with standards not only provides protection but also ensures comfort during prolonged wear. For example, the standards may require the presence of ventilation holes, pockets, or special fasteners, making the suit convenient for work in various conditions. Proper fit is also essential: the work suit should allow freedom of movement, prevent skin chafing, and not restrict breathing.

Comparison with other standards

Internationally, various quality standards exist, and EN is one of the leading ones in Europe. Compared to international standards, such as ISO (International Organization for Standardization), EN takes into account the specifics of European working conditions. For instance, EN 340 regulates the general requirements for protective clothing, including strength, wear resistance, and comfort. In turn, Ukraine's DSTU standards take into account the country's climatic and industrial conditions, making workwear made according to these regulations well-suited to Ukrainian realities.

According to Ukraine’s State Labor Service, about 75% of workplace accidents are related to non-compliance with safety regulations, including the use of uncertified workwear. The introduction of DSTU and EN standards helps to reduce this figure. For example, suits made under EN 343 provide protection from adverse weather conditions and reduce injury risk by 25% compared to uncertified products.

DSTU workwear is not just a mandatory part of the equipment but an essential protective element for the worker.
