History
Gloves existed even in Ancient Egypt, where they were a symbol of a high position. The most ancient gloves were discovered by archaeologists in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. Initially, they were made without finger covers, that is, as mittens, and they were used to protect hands during meals, as well as when shooting from arches. In the Middle Ages, knightly armor necessarily included gloves; at first they were a continuation of the chain mail sleeves, then they began to be manufactured separately. When the plate armor appeared, a plate of plate protecting the hand and fingers was fastened to the chainmail glove from the back of the hand. Special gloves made of thick leather, with wide leggings, were worn during falconry.
The role of gloves was also symbolic, they performed a certain social function. In the Middle Ages, gloves, along with an amethyst ring and a special staff, were given to a person appointed to the post of bishop as a sign of his authority. The ladies gave the gentlemen a glove as a sign of love; it was customary to attach such a gift to the headdress; the soldiers were handed gloves when knighting [1]. It is well known that gloves were used to challenge a duel) (the expression “throwing a glove at someone” still exists in many European languages, including Russian). However, saying hello to someone without removing their gloves was considered indecent. The church was also supposed to take off gloves (this rule remains in Catholic churches now).
In the XII (12) century, first in Italy, and then in France, workshops of glove artisans arose, whose craft became very honorable, and gloves became a luxury item [1].
In the fourteenth (16th) century, the glove was extended to the elbow, and for the first time in 1566, Queen Elizabeth I appeared in such gloves at a reception in Oxford.
